European Break - Berlin Berlin is an amazing city with plenty of history, great architecture, a café culture and just enough shops to keep all but the most hardened retail enthusiasts happy. The history contained in this capital allows an insight into past events like no other place in Europe and as a result, millions of pounds have been ploughed into rejuvenating the city. The outcome is nothing less than impressive.Despite the transformation, Berlin has been able to maintain the history underpinning it. The historic landmarks are scattered around the city and there is no shortage of tour buses lining up to take you to them. From only €13 you can hop on or off all day at numerous historic locations including Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag or the magnificent Dom or Cathedral. Set aside a minimum of half a day to do this, longer if you wish to visit every stop on route.
If history is not your thing and shopping is, then you will not be disappointed, the streets go on for miles and everything is so much cheaper than in the UK. In contrast, one of the most popular destinations is Potsdam Platz which has been rejuvenated and is architecturally impressive. You can not help but be drawn to this square; it is alive during the day and buzzes at night. There are several hotels in this central location and it is packed with bars. If you are seeking an authentic, traditional, Bavarian Bar try drinking a metre at the Lindenbräu where they serve a sample set of 10 different ales. Or if you fancy splashing out, treat yourself to a quiet drink in the Champagne only bar. If a winter break is more your scene, then try booking ahead for the Christmas markets. Berlin's markets are acclaimed to be best in Germany and open on the 22 November and close on New Year's Eve. Imagine being wrapped up in hats and scarves, sipping Glühwein to keep the chill out and joining the locals eating a Bratwurst and you won't be in a better place. If you forget your woollies, there are plenty on offer tucked between the beautiful wooden, Christmas decorations that are hard to get back home and the local food stalls. You can even keep your Glühwein mug as a souvenir of time well spent here! Berlin has its own unique aura that differentiates itself from the other capitals in Europe and it will leave you with lasting memories. The development of the city has been long lasting yet, over the past decade it has blossomed into a bustling and friendly place to visit.
