Munich, Germany

After Berlin, Munich is Germany’s favourite city with everything you would expect of a cosmopolitan destination. The city will not disappoint and has something for everyone. It can be young and vibrant with street musicians and artists entertaining the crowds within the Marienplatz or for those who love the outdoors, the heart of the Alps in less than an hour away.
The best time to visit is from June to early October when the beer gardens, cafes and bars are at their busiest. Try and plan a trip to coincide with the Oktoberfest which this year runs from 22 Sep – 7 Oct. The first weekend is hailed as the best and the loudest with several traditional parades and unbelievable drinking displays. Its heart is centred around Wies’n Park where nine gigantic beer tents complete with endless rows of benches await their customers. Beer is served by the Litre in ‘steins’ and one ‘grosse bier’ can soon become another.
The locals affectionately call those who have succumbed from too much beer as ‘bierleichen’ or beer corpses. This is probably quite an apt description of those unable to make it back to the comfort of their hotels and chose instead to sleep where they fall. However, there is a lighter side and if you wanted to experience a more traditional Bavarian feel then head for the small beer tents during the week and enjoy the ‘oompah’ bands in a more sedate setting.
Bavaria isn’t all about drinking and there is still plenty to occupy anyone wishing to explore the picture book scenery or experience the Bavarian folklore and customs in the neighbouring countryside. By visiting outside of July and August you will avoid the crowds and by choosing destinations slightly off the beaten track you will have a more rustic and natural experience of the area.
