| Incidents of violence and petty crime are common, take sensible precautions to safeguard your valuables and personal safety especially during festivals and carnival periods. The crime rate in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro is higher than in many other regions due to the number of tourists. Never resist muggers or attackers as they are often armed. Take extra care after dark. |
| Vaccinations & Health Alerts |
| It is recommended that you vaccinate against Hep A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. If you have recently visited a country, which is known to suffer from outbreaks of Yellow Fever, you will need to show that you have been vaccinated. Malaria is present and Dengue Fever outbreaks are common. |

| Expect high temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. As the country is so vast the rainy season affects different parts of the country at different times, expect it from January to April in the north, April to July in the north-east and November to March in the Rio and Sao Paulo areas. |

| The Catholic Church is highly respected. Carry proof of ID at all times. Drug offences are subject to strict punishments. |
| Getting Around |
| Most people use internal flights to get around. There are limited rail facilities but an extensive road network. Car hire is available in most major cities. Drive with care, Brazil has a high road accident rate. There is a zero tolerance to drink driving. Flash floods do occur after heavy rain. |

For 2010 Carnival falls the week before Lent which commences on 17 February, Easter from 2-5 April, Ascension Day on 16 May, Whitsun (Pentecost) on 23 May, Corpus Christi on 6 June and Assumption on 15 August. |

| Visa Requirements |
| Not required for UK citizens for stays up to 90 days. Some restrictions have been imposed on male tourists aged between 25-50 and travelling alone. In some cases their visa has been reduced to 30 days. |
