Travel Advice on Health, Climate, Local Info, Customs and Laws
Travel Advice/Warnings
Care should still be taken to safeguard yourself and your valuables at all times. There have been a recent spate of demonstrations and you should therefore avoid large gatherings in case they turn violent. Seek local advice before you travel further afield. You should avoid the northen border with Columbia, the crime rate is very high and kidnapping is common. The FCO currently advise against all but essential travel to within six miles of the Tungurahua volcano, including Baños. Volcanic activity increased in July 2008 and there is still a risk of further eruptions.
Vaccinations & Health Alerts
It is recommended that you vaccinate against Hep A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. Take precautions to reduce the chances of being bitten by mosquitoes as Malaria and Dengue Fever are commonplace along the coastal regions.

Local Customs/Laws
Must carry ID at all times.
Getting Around
Internal flights are the best way to get between cities but the views offered by the railways are stunning. The roads are in a variable state due to the heavy rain during the year and they are worse in the remote regions. You should avoid travelling by any means on the roads at night due to armed hold ups - especially on the buses. Do not hail taxis in the street, many are unlicensed. Car hire is available with 4x4 vehicles best suited to many roads. Police checkpoints are a common sight due to the increase in criminal activity.
Public Holidays/Festivals
New Year on 1 January, Easter celebrations start before Easter itself, Easter falls between 2-5 April 10, Corpus Christi on 6 June, Columbus Day on 12 October, All Souls Day on 2 November and Christmas Day on 25 December.
