| El Salvador is not a particularly safe country to visit. The FCO website has the latest travel advice. Robbery and murder are not uncommon. Take sensible precautions to safeguard your valuables and your own personal safety. Downtown San Salvador is especially dangerous. Do not go out alone and do not carry large amounts of cash. Photocopy all travel documentation and keep them in a safe place. |
| Vaccinations & Health Alerts |
| It is recommended that you vaccinate against Hep A,Typhoid and carry proof of Yellow Fever if travelling from an infected country. Malaria is present and Dengue Fever outbreaks coincide with the rainy season. |

| Hot sub tropical climate where the coastal areas are particularly hot. Expect the rainy season from June to November, hurricanes are to be expected during this time. The upland regions experience a more temperate climate. |

| It is rude to point your finger or show your foot at anyone. Do not photograph military buildings or establishments. |
| Getting Around |
| Internal flights are the safest way to travel between main towns. Rail links are also possible. Only one third of the roads are suitable for use during the rainy season. Car jacking and robberies are common therefore take local advice before venturing off the main roads. Car hire is possible in San Salvador. |

| New Year on 1 January, La Paz on 16 January, Samana Santa celebrations are held in the week before Easter, Labour Day on 1 May, Fiestas Patronales runs from the 4-6 August, Independence Day on 16 September, Dia de la Raza on 12 October and All Souls Day on 2 November. Christian holidays for 2010 include: Lent which commences on 17 February, Easter from 2-5 April, Ascension Day on 16 May, Whitsun (Pentecost) on 23 May, Corpus Christi on 6 June, Assumption on 15 August and Christmas Day on 25 December. |

| Visa Requirements |
| El Salvador is part of the Central America Border Control Agreement (CA-4). Under the terms of this agreement, British tourists may travel within any of the CA-4 countries (Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala) for a period of up to 90 days, without completing entry and exit formalities at Border Immigration checkpoints. This period begins at the first point of entry into any of the CA-4 countries. Fines are applied for travellers who exceed this 90 day limit, although you may apply for an extension of up to 30 days before the 90 days limit expires. You must have 6 months validity remaining on your passport and an onward ticket. |
