Travel Advice/Warnings
Check the FCO website for up to date advice but after the earthquake, they advise against all but essential travel. Violent crime is common, walking in the capital at any time of the night or day is not recommended and you are advised not to go out at night. The situation is better outside of the capital.
Vaccinations & Health Alerts
It is recommended that you vaccinate against Hep A and Typhoid. Carry proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever if travelling from an country where Yellow Fever is present. Malaria tablets will be required. Dengue Fever exists. The rate of HIV/AIDS is one of the highest in the world.

The climate is tropical and the temperature fairly constant throughout the year. Expect rain at any time but especially from April to May and August to October. Hurricanes are experienced between June to November.

Local Customs/Laws
Only wear beachwear around the pool or on the beach. Be aware of the superstitious nature of the islanders and that voodoo is practiced. Do not change money on the street. US$ are widely accepted. Possession of drugs can lead to a spell in prison. Homosexuality is not widely accepted.
Getting Around
Internal flights are unreliable. All weather roads link main towns, the rest are of a very poor quality. Car hire is available but if you have to go then hire a car complete with a driver and travel with a guide where possible.

New Year and the National Day on 1 January, Ancestor's Day on 2 January, Carnival the week before Lent which commences on 17 February 10, Easter from 2-5 April 10, Bastilla's Day on 14 April, Labour Day on 1 May, Flag Day on 18 May, Corpus Christi on 6 June, Assumption on 15 August, Anniversary of the death of Dessalines on 17 October, UN Day on 24 October, All Saints on 1 November, All Souls on 2 November, Battle of Vertieres Day on 18 November and Christmas on 25 December. The Peasant Carnival runs every weekend after the pre-Lent festivities until Easter. The island comes alive with colour during this time and you will get the opportunity to see some of the Voodoo culture.
