Due to Iceland's northern position, the weather can be very changeable at any time of year. It is a volcanic island with extremes of weather. They experience extensive darkness in the winter.

Local Customs/Laws
Drink driving limits are stricter than in the UK. The importation of Khat(Quat) is illegal. Carry your passport at all times and ensure that the NOK section is completed. Alcohol is extremely expensive and locals tend to go out much later than you would expect.
Getting Around
Buses and ferry routes serve the island well in the summer but can be restricted in the winter. There are no railways. Car hire is available but note that most roads are gravel based and headlights must be on at all times.

New Year on 1 January, Epiphany on 6 January, Easter from 2-5 April 10, May Day on 1 May, Mother's Day on 13 May and National Day on 17 June. Christmas celebrations start on 23 December and last until the 26th.
