Italy enjoys warm summers which can be stifling inland and in the far south. The mountain regions are cooler and get heavy snow in the winter. Venice is liable to flooding at certain times of the year.

Be aware that local laws exist in towns like Venice and Florence and you may be fined if you drop litter or eat or drink in the vicinity of churches or public buildings.
Getting Around
All modes of public transport and efficient and safe. Car hire is easily available but beware Italian roads get very congested.

New Year on 1 January, Epiphany on 6 January, Easter from 2-5 April 10, Anniversary of Liberation on 25 April, Labour Day on 1 May, Republic Day on 2 June, Assumption on 15 August, All Saints on 1 November, Immaculate Conception on 8 December and Christmas on 25-26 December. Expect to see festivals in the run up to Ash Wednesday which falls on 17 February this year. The Venice carnival is the most famous and starts on 6-16 February in 2010. In Gubbio, Umbria they celebrate the Race of the Candles on 15 May and Siena, Tuscany has the spectacular Il Palio on the 2 July and 16 August each year.
