Local Customs/Laws
Paraguay is a conservative society. Show respect for local customs and traditions. Carry ID at all times, a photocopy of your passport is acceptable. Travellers cheques are not widely used. Use only authorised Bureaux to change money.
Getting Around
Internal flights are available but often disrupted by the weather. The rail service is unreliable or worse. Not all roads are surfaced and these suffer in the bad weather. A road upgrade programme is in progress. Long distance buses are popular and taxis are used for shorter distances. Secure your valuables and belongings on public transport as pick pocketing is rife and assaults are common. Take sensible precautions and do not venture out alone after dark. Expect to be stopped by the police or military to check your documents.
