Travel Advice/Warnings
This is generally a safe country but it has been targeted by terrorists and the Kurdish area in the south-east is still subject to turmoil. Street crime is common in tourist areas. Do not draw attention to yourself by carrying valuables and expensive jewellery. Be conscious of your personal safety. Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings. Do not take photographs of military or public buildings or establishments - airports etc.
Vaccinations & Health Alerts
It is recommended that you vaccinate against Hep A, Polio and Typhoid. Malaria is present in some areas.

The south and west coasts have a Mediterranean climate and are generally warm and sunny. The interior can be very cold in the winter.

Local Customs/Laws
Respect local customs and dress modestly away from the beach areas. It is an offence to insult the Turkish nation, their flag or currency. Public displays of affection are not welcome.
Getting Around
The condition of the roads and the standard of driving are generally poor. There is a good rail and flight network but be aware that there were a number of rail crashes last year. The border to Iraq has tight security restrictions in place.
Public Holidays/Festivals
Muslim holidays for 2010 include: Sunni Muslims celebrate the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday on 26 February and Shia Muslims celebrate this on 3 March (not celebrated by all), Ramadam which commences from sunset on 11 August and culminates with Eid al-Fitr on 10 September, the Feast of the Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha on 17 November, Al-Hijira on 18 December and Ashura on 16 December. Other holidays include New Year on 1 January, National Sovereignty Day on 23 April, Commemoration of Ataturk on 19 May, Victory Day on 30 August and Republic Day on 29 October.
